CanNor-11-006
Whitehorse, Yukon (July 13, 2011) – The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) and Minister of Health today announced just over $100,000 in funding for the Village of Teslin to strengthen their economic infrastructure and increase tourism opportunities.
“The tourism kiosks and signage in Teslin will encourage visitors to stay longer and access more local services, increasing business and creating jobs for the community,” said Minister Aglukkaq.
“This project will enable the community to show visitors what Teslin has to offer in terms of its natural environment, history and culture,” said Yukon MP Ryan Leef. “These initiatives can help attract a broader range of visitors to the Territory, and create more sustainable local economies.”
“We are very appreciative of the assistance from CanNor, which will benefit the whole community by informing members and visitors of the many upcoming community events,” said Frank Thomas, Chief Administrative Officer for the Village of Teslin. “The two kiosks will help the Village of Teslin and Teslin Tlingit Council advertise upcoming events and will allow local businesses and museums to provide information for tourists traveling in the beautiful southern lakes region of Yukon. “
This project was made possible through funding from CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification, and capacity building in all three territories.
SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
