Reporting on Green Procurement

This supplementary information table supports reporting on green procurement activities in accordance with the Policy on Green Procurement.

Context

Although the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency is not bound by the Federal Sustainable Development Act and is not required to develop a full Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy (DSDS), the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency adheres to the principles of the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS) by complying with the Policy on Green Procurement.

The Policy on Green Procurement supports the Government of Canada's effort to promote environmental stewardship. In keeping with the objectives of the policy, the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency supports sustainable development by integrating environmental performance considerations into the procurement decision-making process through the actions described in the 2019 to 2022 FSDS "Greening Government" goal.

Include criteria that address carbon reduction, sustainable plastics and broader environmental benefits into procurement for goods and services that have a high environmental impact.

Set departmental targets to reduce the environmental impact of specific goods or services.

Starting Points: CanNor will identify and report on the use of environmental criteria for procurement for goods and services and set departmental targets to reduce the environmental impact of specific goods or services during fiscal year 2023-2024 as part of tabling the Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy. To align with the 2020 Greening Government Strategy, reporting on the departmental green procurement targets for goods and services will begin following data collection in 2023-2024.

Green procurement incorporates environmental considerations into purchasing decisions and is expected to motivate suppliers to reduce the environmental impact of the goods and services they deliver, and their supply chains.

Departments will adopt clean technology and undertake clean technology demonstration projects Create departmental set asides or targets for procurement of clean technology goods and services. Starting Point: CanNor will identify and report departmental projects that adopt clean technology by the end of fiscal year 2023-2024 as part of tabling the Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy. Departmental clean technology projects pertaining to facilities will be identified by the end of 2023-2024 as part of tabling the Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy.

Actions by individual departments that incent, support, or procure state-of-the-art innovative clean technologies that lower the environmental footprint of government operations while contributing to the success of clean-tech businesses in Canada.

Report on integrating sustainable development

During the 2021–22 reporting cycle, the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency had no proposals that required a strategic environmental assessment (SEA) and no public statements were produced.
